Claire Walter died on July 20, 2026, at the age of 82, having spent a lifetime proving that a person could be a wanderer and a homebody at once, and that there was no contradiction in it at all. Claire was born on September 9, 1943, and grew up to become the kind of woman who could describe a ski run in the Dolomites and a bottle of Barolo with equal precision — and often did, in the same sentence. She studied at a university in Boston before building a career entirely on her own terms, working as a freelance writer for herself, by herself, answering to no one but her own curiosity. It suited her. She wrote about the places she went, and she went nearly everywhere. Claire skied mountains on three continents, chased good wine into small villages that did not appear on maps, and ate meals she still talked about years later. But her family says the truest thing about her was this: no matter how far she traveled, she always loved coming home. She would walk in from weeks away, drop her bags in the hallway, and declare how happy she was to be home. Home, for Claire, meant her husband, Ral Sandberg, and her son, Andrew John Cameron-Walter, who together made up the place she was always glad to return to. She is survived by both of them, and by the long, well-stamped passport of a life that took her out into the world again and again, always with a return ticket in hand. Claire's family invites those who knew her to pour a good glass of wine, think of somewhere she once described in vivid detail, and remember that she made a case, better than most, for loving both the leaving and the coming home.
